“I can tackle a year’s worth of growth in 30 days!”
That’s the lie I subconsciously tell myself every January.
Armed with a stack of ambitious goals and a fresh planner — this one is my newest obsession — I convince myself this is the year I’ll finally do it all. Master new skills, overhaul my daily routines, and emerge Stephen Mostrom 2.0.
Want to guess how that usually turns out?
Spoiler: Not well.
By February, I’m burnt out, overwhelmed, and frustrated. I’ve barely made a dent. And I’m well on my way to joining the 92% of resolution setters who call it quits.
This year, I’m done with the all-or-nothing mindset. Instead, I’m aiming for a realistic new year — strategically choosing high-impact areas and letting go of the rest.

The “If X, Then Y” Playbook
I’ve learned a hard lesson over the years:
Growth doesn’t come from doing everything.
It comes from doing the right things.
In January, it’s oh-so-easy to fall into the trap of overcommitting and under-strategizing. The end result: burnout, frustration, and scattered efforts that leave us wondering where our time and good intentions went.
Let’s try a different approach.
In the upcoming sections, I lay out an “if x, then y” playbook, designed to help you identify what matters most and take targeted action. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution — instead, pick the scenario that feels relevant to you and dive in.
If you’re unsure where to start . . .
If you want to upgrade your resume . . .
If you’re ready to unlock new opportunities . . .
If you’re feeling stuck in your comfort zone . . .
If you want (and need) to get more done . . .
Ok, enough background. Let’s get going.
If you’re unsure where to start . . . then focus on clarity
It’s nearly impossible to move forward when you don’t know where you’re headed. Like driving a car without an end destination — you could end up anywhere.
So, if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed by new year’s growth options, the best first step might feel counterintuitive: pause and reflect.
Carve out time for clarity, the foundation for intentional growth.
Here’s how to get started:
✅ Review your wins and challenges from last year. What worked? What didn’t? Understanding your past can guide your future.
✅ Set one or two key priorities. Forget the 10-item to-do list. What areas, if improved, will make the biggest difference in your work or personal life?
✅ Ask yourself the big questions. Where do you want to be at the end of this year? What skills or habits will help you get there?
If you need a tool to help organize your thoughts, try journaling or creating a personal SWOT analysis.
And remember:
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s direction.
If you want to upgrade your resume . . . then pick one skill area to go deep
It’s tempting to try to learn everything at once — signing up for five online courses, watching countless YouTube tutorials, or juggling too many projects.
But, in my experience, real growth comes from focus.
Here’s how to take aim:
✅ Identify your next high-impact skill. What’s one area that will elevate your career or make your work more effective?
✅ Set a 30-day sprint. Dedicate the next month to immersing yourself in this skill. Whether it’s through books, courses, or hands-on practice, create a focused and time-blocked window for learning.
✅ Seek feedback early and often. Ask a mentor, manager, or peer for input as you grow. This keeps you accountable and accelerates your progress.
By narrowing your focus, you’ll see faster, more meaningful results — and you’ll avoid the burnout that comes from trying to learn it all.
Think momentum, not multitasking.
Tool: NextLearn GPT
Last year, I invested 100+ hours into a little side project.
I called it NextLearn GPT.
The idea was simple:
Use the raw power of Generative AI to make learning plans easier. So, I wrote lines and lines of instructions, combining insights from my decade-plus in corporate L&D and higher education, plus the latest in prompt best practices.
The early feedback has been strong.
So, if you’re looking for your next skill goal, take a look.
If you’re ready to unlock new opportunities . . . then invest in your network
Your network is more than a list of contacts — it’s a source of opportunities, insights, and support. Meaningful relationships can kick open the door to new roles, collaborations, or ideas.
Building your network? Think intention and consistency.
Here’s how to invest:
✅ Reconnect with your circle. Reach out to three people you haven’t spoken to in a while. A simple check-in can reignite the connection and lead to unexpected conversations.
✅ Expand your reach. Join an industry group, attend a virtual event, or engage thoughtfully on LinkedIn. Show up consistently to build credibility and discover new voices.
✅ Deepen key relationships. Schedule a 1:1 with someone in your field, a mentor, or a peer you admire. Ask thoughtful questions and offer support — the best networks grow through mutual value.
Bottom line: Every connection you invest in has the potential to shape your growth, whether it’s through a new discovery, fresh perspective, or lasting collaboration.
Your next opportunity could be one conversation away.
If you’re feeling stuck in the comfort zone . . . then take a small, bold step ASAP
We all know that growth happens outside of our comfort zones — but stepping too far, too fast can feel overwhelming.
The good news? You don’t need a giant leap to break free. Small, intentional risks are enough to start expanding your boundaries.
Here’s how to begin:
✅ Take the next small step. If speaking up in meetings makes you nervous, start with a single comment or question. If public speaking feels daunting, volunteer to present to a small group instead of a large audience.
✅ Say “yes” to one new challenge. Look for an opportunity just slightly outside your comfort zone — a new project, a stretch assignment, or a leadership role.
✅ Reflect on what you’ve learned. After each step, take a moment to recognize the progress you’ve made and what you’ve gained. Confidence grows with every small win.
My favorite part of comfort zone work is how it unlocks other sides of your career. When you’re confident and bold, unexpected moments have a way of showing up on your doorstep.

If you want (and need) to get more done . . . then take a hard look at your daily habits
Odds are, working harder isn’t the answer to your 2025 goals.
Instead, focus on building habits that help you work smarter. The way you spend your time on a daily basis creates the foundation for everything else.
Here’s how to take control of your habits and boost your output:
✅ Audit your day. Track where your time goes for a week. Identify patterns, distractions, and habits that aren’t serving your goals.
✅ Plan with intention. Set aside five minutes at the end of each day to identify your top 1–3 priorities for tomorrow. Starting the day with a clear focus makes it easier to stay on track.
✅ Protect your time. Use time-blocking to carve out uninterrupted windows for your most important work. Guard these blocks like appointments — because they are.
Small changes to your daily habits can lead to big results over time. And when you align your habits with your goals, you’ll get more done with less stress.
The end result: finally feeling in control of how you spend your time.
To Wrap
2025 is a year packed with potential. And with the motivation of a calendar refresh, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by all that raw potential.
Then, just as easily, it’s wasted.
My goal for this year is to channel that potential into focused, intentional action. Not by doing everything, but by doing the right things — the ones that align with my goals and make a meaningful impact.
I hope you’ll join me.
Happy New Year,
Stephen
